In most cases we have several clients (with participants of an experiment) connected to one or more www-servers, which access a common database.
The figure shows a hypothetical situation where clients with different operating systems are located in two different places. The Internet connects clients with the www-server and the latter with the database. Within Europe this should be sufficiently fast for most experiments.
